Running is a separate universe

And that's why I love it.

When I run, time stops. There's just me and the road and my music. I'll get home when I get home. All responsibilities are invisible. All worries are just thoughts. Any stress is pounded into the pavement. Any tears are lost mid-sob by the pressure in my chest and the desperate need for air.

I love the runner's high. I love the 40 minute upswing. I love the searing pain across my ribs. I love the ache in my side that travels up my abdomen to my collar bone. I love the sound of my feet on the pavement. I love watching the sky change throughout the time of my run. I love listening to music so loud that all other sound goes unheard. I love the striving. I love the cool down after an amazing run. I love feeling nothing but physical pain and exertion. I love the mental silence.

I run to cope. I run to burn calories. I run to break my own record. I run to be energized. I run to hang out with God. I run to think. I run to be happy. I run to increase my tolerance for pain. I run for no reason. I run to get places. I run to see new streets. I run to get up early in the morning. I run to follow the sun. I run to listen to music. I run to pray. I run to feel fresh air. I run to get wet. I run to not care. I run to be at peace.

I run.

"Know why people run marathons? ...Because running is rooted in our collective imagination, and our imagination is rooted in running. Language, art, science; space shuttles, Starry Night, intravascular surgery; they all had their roots in our ability to run. Running was the superpower that made us human -- which means its a superpower all humans possess."
~ Christopher McDougall
