Happy Star Wars Day!
Yes, dorky. Yes, amazing. This is my life on a daily basis. Dorky and amazing.
Anyway, today is Star Wars Day and I am going to celebrate by watching one of the movies. Haven't decided which though. I think that my favorite is Return of the Jedi. It was the first Star Wars I was exposed to. And whoever decided that I should watch Star Wars in the first place made a serious error because I quickly became obsessed.
I saw Return of the Jedi on December 25, 2004. I kind of fell in love with Luke Skywalker and I loved the epic scene between him and Darth Vader and the Emperor. I got the other two original Star Wars from the library and watched them soon after. Then came the books. I got all the books about the movie, researched everything I could about Star Wars (the original) and cut out pictures of Luke's face. I also watched my favorite scenes over and over again. And this was before youtube became a part of my life, so there was a lot of rewinding and chapter searching.
Eventually, I became aware of the new Star Wars movies (cereal boxes, and the fact that Revenge of the Sith came out in 2005). By that time I was friends with my best friend and before Revenge came out I slept over at her house and watched Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. Then I saw Revenge of the Sith twice in theaters - once with my best friend and her family and the other with my cousin.
I had Star Wars Trivial Pursuit... read Star Wars novels... yeah, it got pretty bad. And I don't remember anyone seriously beating me at Trivial Pursuit. I actually ordered Phantom Menace through Frosted Mini-Wheat's. I collected 8 cereal bar codes and sent them in with a form. The DVD came a few weeks later.
Now, I have all the movies except for Attack of the Clones. And it's safe to say that I'm a little less obsessed. I realized that Luke was kind of a dope and that Han Solo was much more good looking and interesting. I also now think that the new Star Wars are not as amazing as the original. But I will watch them because Ewan McGregor is Obi-Wan and I love both the actor and the character.
Don't even get me on Star Wars music. I already was a fan of movie music, but I'm pretty sure after watching Star Wars, I annoyed the heck out of my family. I loved it. I got the cds from the library. I even purchased some of them and got them for birthdays. John Williams isn't my favorite, but paired with the Star Wars saga... I was hooked. I remember one night in particular: Listening to the Attack of the Clones love theme, reading The Amber Spyglass, and bawling on my bed.
I was an interesting middle school student. Sometimes I wonder how I even had any friends at all.
Anyway, that is my own personal Star Wars saga.
Also, to celebrate May the Fourth... I put on my Jedi temporary tattoo!
I am a geek. And proud.
