Picture book month

a few thoughts on youth library services

As I delve more and more into the world of children's literacy, the digital youth, and youth library services, I am starting to feel my own age. I turned 20 last June. About three years ago, I was still a part of this special population. It wasn't that long ago that I was using the children and teen sections on the Sno-Isle Library website or attending teen oriented classes and sessions. Perhaps that's why I feel more pulled toward youth services involving the preschool, elementary, and tween groups--there's a larger age difference.

Because of my relative youth, I feel slightly unqualified for youth services. I am relatively inexperienced, young, and less knowledgeable. But I also wonder if my comparative closeness to these age groups allows me a different and perhaps more intimate perspective and thought process on how to serve children and teens.

We shall see.

In a slightly related note, November is Picture Book Month (as well as NaNoWriMo which I am halfheartedly participating in and No Shave November which I am not participating in). For more information, check out the official website: Picture Book Month.

To celebrate, I'll leave you with one of my favorite childhood picture books: When the Sun Rose by Barbara Helen Berger. I loved the beautiful pictures and the story of a brief but intimate friendship with dolls and rainbows and roses and lions.

"When the sun rose today, a friend came to visit me."
