Said young Sadie McClary,
"And the fellow who runs it
Thinks it's most primary.
"But if I ran the library,
Said young Sadie McClary,
I'd make a few changes.
That's what I'd do."
Good old Dr. Seuss. I envy his ability to rhyme as well. Never has been a strong point for me. If I Ran the Zoo was one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books when I was younger. I appreciated and sympathized with the imagination of the young boy as he pictures how he would run the zoo. Even still, I dream about how I would run, not the zoo, but the library:
- The library would not be drab. Not a single white wall. No grey or white or light blue/clear anything.
- Every librarian would be helpful, approachable and not condescending. Also, they would not be glued to their computers.
- There would be an area with comfy and large reading chairs.
- Limited amounts of computers. Yes, a library is for research, but I like books better. People should read more.
- All people should have to turn in and pick up their own books. No special privileges. Even if you are a law professor.
- No overdue fines.
- It would have a heart like the downtown Seattle Public Library

- There would be a noisy section of the library and a quiet section... to please everyone.
- If possible, it would be divided into sections by continent and have an "Around the World" sort of feel.
- It would be twenty-four hours. And homeless people could stay there as long as they wanted. In fact, it would be a library/homeless shelter.
I suppose that's where I'd start. Of course, this would be my utopian library. But nevertheless, a future librarian can dream.
